Wu Tianming, a Chinese film director and producer who was considered one of the leading "Fourth Generation" filmmakers, has died.
Born in Sanyuan county, Shaanxi province, Wu attended the Beijing Film Academy and was head of the renowned Xi'an Film Studio from 1984, until the political climate forced him into exile in the US in 1989. At the Xi'an Film Studio, he was a key mentor to "Fifth Generation" filmmakers Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige.
Wu returned to China in 1994 to direct The King of Masks, for which he won "Best Director" at the 1996 Tokyo International Film Festival.
Many stars mourned Wu's passing on Weibo. "Shocked and sad to hear of director Wu Tianming's death," Zhang Yimou wrote. "A few months ago, he was kind enough to plan a film together, this unexpectedly became our farewell."
