REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The chairman of Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI), Slamet Effendy Yusuf, pledged the Sunni and Shiite to avoid sectarian conflicts. The difference teachings between the two main groups of Muslim are obvious and contrast, yet plausible, he said on Friday.
"Keep the unity among Muslims by looking for similarities instead of differences," said Yusuf, who also chaired the central committe of Nahdlatul Ulama.
"We cannot tackle the conflicts if we keep focusing on differences rather than common values shared by both groups," Yusuf continued.
Disimilarities, Yusuf said, also existed among Sunnis. He refered to Wahabi and non-Wahabi issue among Sunnis. Local government and religious leaders in Sampang must restrain to avoid conflict and provocation.
