REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – On its visit to China, Indonesian Council of Ulamas (MUI) eyed on the cooperation in education, art, communication, and halal products with China Islamic Association (CIA). The Secretary General of MUI, Ichwan Sam, said that as cited in its official website, mui.or.id.
“The meeting between MUI and CIA has strategic value as they discussed some plans on cooperation,” the Deputy Secretary General of MUI, Amirsyah Tambunan, said on Wednesday.
The 13-day visit, started from May 12-24, was led by the Chairman of MUI, Amihdan. Some representatives from a number of associations also joined the visit, including Azyumardi Azra from Indonesian Muslim Intellectual Association (ICMI).
The President of the CIA, Lin Chang Hua, said on the warm dinner that the Indonesian delegations were like “close relatives” to their community. Hua expected the meeting to enhance the relationship of China and Indonesia.
The scope of the cooperation on education, Sam said, were Chinese and Arabian language, and also exchange of scholarship for Muslim students, while the cooperation on art were exchange of visit between Chinese and Indonesian ulamas, Muslim scholars, and Islamic leaders, and also the producing films on Islamic heritage.
In communication sector, the delegation recommends special program in Bahasa in China Central Television (CCTV) so that it is accessible for Muslim in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, and South Thailand. This cooperation also suggests China Radio International (CRI) to cover more on Islamic society in Indonesia and China.
The next cooperation is the implementation of halal standard in China. “I will demand the exporting Chinese company to obtain halal certificate,” the China’s Vice Minister of Religious Affairs, Zhang Le Bing, said. Such cooperation would be discussed further in cabinet meeting, he said.
On the meeting with the rector of Huaqiao University, Prof Jia Yimin, Amihdan hoped the university could facilitate the adequate praying place for Muslim and halal foods. Amihdan believes, such facilities will attract more Muslim students to study in Huaqiao.
