REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MEDAN -- A total of 4,846 people have been evacuated since Mount Sinabung in the Karo district of North Sumatra erupted a few days ago, the National Disaster Mitigation Board (BNPB) pointed out.

The evacuees were being sheltered in 11 different places, including a church, mosque and the Indonesian National Youth Committee (KNPI) building, BPBN spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho stated via a short text message on Monday night.

The BNPB office in North Sumatra is continuing to provide the evacuees with emergency response aid.

Deputy North Sumatra Governor HT Erry Nuradi expressed hope that the evacuees would abide by the instructions given by authorized agencies, particularly the BNPB and the Volcanic and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG).

Mount Sinabung had erupted again at 3.58 p.m. on Sunday, sending a cloud of smoke up to 4,000 meters into the sky in the southerly and southwesterly directions, the BNPB stated.

The volcano also spewed hot clouds, which had spread over a 1.2 kilometer radius, the agency said.

But the hot clouds had not claimed any lives as residents, who were living in a 3 kilometer radius had been evacuated to safer areas, Sutopo said.

All the evacuees are safe, he reiterated.

According to the PVMBG, the volcano had erupted five times on Sunday.
