REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Jakarta police have summoned 49 school principals in the city and 49 tender winners for questioning on Monday in alleged corruption in the procurement of Uninterruptible Power Supply" (UPS).
The corruption case unfolded in a heated conflict between the Jakarta governor and the city council.
Earlier Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama chose to report the case to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), but police moved faster summoning witnesses.
"Tomorrow we set scheduled for investigations of 49 senior high school headmasters as the recipients the UPS as witnesses," Adj Sr.Comr Aji Indra from the Jakarta police detective directorate said on Sunday (8/3)
Indra said investigations of the witnesses are to get to the root of alleged misuse of budget hundreds of billions of rupiahs in state fund in the procurement of UPS for the 49 schools.
The police investigators are expected to name soon suspects in the case which involved heads or former heads of education offices in the city and other officials of the city administration.
The Jakarta police already investigated a number of witnesses including former head of the West Jakarta Education Office identified as AU and former head of the Central Jakarta Education Office ZS.
Basuki, better known as Ahok reported to the KPK about inclusion of suspicious spending of Rp12.1 trillion in the draft budget of the city in 2014.
In a meeting designed to find compromise but degraded into a slanging match the outspoken governor accused the city council of inflating the prices of UPS in the budget to as high as Rp5.8 billion per unit for each of the 49 schools.
Some of the school headmasters said they did not ask for the UPS and they would rather ask for the repair of their damaged old schools buildings than UPS.
