REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian banks are of the view that Indonesia still holds considerable potential for foreign investors, despite the trend of the global economic slowdown expected to continue until next year.

"One of the countries that is still very keen to invest in Indonesia is Japan, which has placed Indonesia in the first place as an investment destination, because it is considered to have great potential, especially in terms of population," Managing Director and Head of Global Markets HSBC Indonesia, Ali Setiawan, said on Thursday.

"Indonesia is still attractive for investors, not only Japanese, but also European and U.S. investors. They are still in love with Indonesia, because the potential is enormous in terms of population," he stated.

The infrastructure sector offers the highest number of investment opportunities, which have been ramped up further by the administration of President Joko Widodo.

"In the infrastructure sector, we are still lagging behind the neighboring countries," Ali said.

According to him, investment in Indonesia will continue to grow because of the success of the government and of Bank of Indonesia in dealing with inflation and improve the trade deficit.

Ali hoped the government is more transparent and consistent in implementing policies in reality.

Consistent policies and targeted investment will create a comfortable business climate, especially for foreign investors, he added.
