REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAYAPURA -- Ariyanto Kogoya and Jundi Wanimbo were sentenced to two months and 26 days in jail on Thursday after being proven guilty of provoking rioting in Tolikara, Karubaga, Papua, on July 16 last year.
Judges in the district court of Jayapura ruled that the two had been the provocateurs of the incident in which 80 people had attacked 300 members of the congregation conducting Idul Fitr prayers at the sub-district military command in Karubaga at 07.30 am local time.
One of the judges, Safrudin, said the act of the two violated Article 160 in conjunction of Article 55 of the Criminal Code, which had instigated the people to attack others.
Ariyanto shouted words, such as "stop" and "halt" to motivate 80 people to throw stones at the congregation and burn 70 kiosks, the fire from which spread to a house of prayer, he said.
At the time, Jundi had opened his shirt and shouted at people to stop the shootings and called on the people to disperse, he said.
The two had caused unrest with their acts, but were not found to have been involved in crimes so far.
Chief Judge Andrianus said the two were free because the sentence was equivalent to the time they had spent in detention so far.
Gustaf Kawer, the lawyer of the two, said he would respond to the verdict within the next seven days.
Prosecutor Glory said, "Our demand is four months for them and therefore we will also think in the next few days before giving our response on the verdict."
