Vice president says the Youth Pledge meaning must be preserved

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Vice President Jusuf Kalla said the meaning of Youth Pledge Day must be preserved. The Youth Pledge Day commemorated at October 28.  "May be 88 years ago, Indonesian youth only thought about the unity, but the today we should interpret it as should be interpreted as the unity and efforts to build and develop the country," Kalla said at the Vice Presidential Office, Jakarta, on Friday.

He added Youth Pledge Day has different meaning from other countries. On the pledge, the youth agree to set Indonesian language as the national language. "In contrast to India or anywhere, they have many national languages. So it was hard to make them united. How many official language in the Singapore? Three," he said.

Annual commemoration of the Youth Pledge day on October 28 has been held at the Presidential Palace. The palace held arts and cultural performances titled 'Nusantara Berdendang' (the Archipelago is Singing).

In its official statement, Head of Bureau for the Press, Media, and Information Affairs, Secretariat of the President, Bey Machmudin said this event was held at the Youth Pledge Day, October 28, 2016 at 19:00 pm at Merdeka Palace courtyard. The event involved hundreds of performers who reflected the diversity of cultures, regions, and traditions in the spirit of national unity.

Olympic gold medalist in badminton, Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir read out the  text of the Youth Pledge. This was free event.
