REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), as the incumbent candidate for the presidential election, called on volunteers to reach out to the people to inform them about the achievements made by his government so far. He held a a meeting with campaign volunteers grouped in Bravo-5 at Putri Duyung Cottage in Ancol, North Jakarta, Monday.
"Going door to door and explaining to those who are not informed well is important. It is actually our big job to explain to the people about what we have so far achieved," Jokowi said.
He explained about his past experience while campaigning for the mayor of Solo. He said that political landscape has changed and people have been bored with rallies.
In view of that, he decided to choose the door-to-door approach by reaching out to the people or "blusukan" (impromptu visit), as it has now been known as his trademark to explain his programs. Due to this method, Jokowi said he was able to win more than 90 percent of votes.
"So what is needed is to explain to the people what we have done and what we will do when time comes. I also explained about the big job we are going to carry out in large scale," he remarked.
Jokowi later became the governor of Jakarta. But before finishing his term, he took part in the presidential election and won.
He is now planning to bid for his reelection, with chief cleric KH Ma'ruf Amin as his running mate. He will compete against former army general Prabowo Subianto who he defeated in the last election and who would now run with young businessman Sandiaga Uno as his mate.
