REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NUNUKAN -- The ongoing renovation of the Dwikora Struggle Monument in North Kalimantan's Nunukan district will preserve a monument honoring national heroes, said Naval Chief of Staff Admiral Marsetio.

The renovation was begun by the Naval Headquarters to renew those monuments related to the struggles of the nation's fighters who defended or restored the unitary Republic of Indonesia from the colonial ruler, he said here on Saturday.

Marsetio, who had previously been chief of the Ambalat task force in Sebatik Island, Nunukan district, said the Russian-made PT-76 tank, Howitzer cannon and anchor, now part of the Dwikora Monument, were used by the Indonesian Navy during the battle against the colonial ruler.

Those armaments used by the Indonesian heroes had been supplied by the Naval Headquarters to the regions where national heroes struggled to protect the Republic of Indonesia against the colonial ruler, he said.

"It is true that Dwikora fighters used these armaments, so we returned them to the region where the struggle by our fighters occurred to maintain the unitary Republic of Indonesia," he said after inaugurating the monument.

The monument remains a token of appreciation for the heroic actions of the nation's heroes, he said.
