Minister Lukman asks KPK to guarantee prisoner's worship freedom

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Religious Affairs Minister, Lukman Hakim Saifuddin hoped the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) could assure the freedom of KPK prisoners to carry out their worship in accordance with their religion. If there were complaints related to it, Lukman hoped KPK could resolve it.

"In relation to the news that Mr. SDA (Suryadharma Ali) and several other prisoners in KPK's jail, Pomdam Jaya Guntur which were complain because they could not shalat in the mosque there, I'm very concerned. I hope KPK will immediately resolve these complaints," said Minister of Religious Affairs, Jakarta, on Saturday, June 20.

According to Minister, each prisoner should remain guaranteed freedom to worship according to their religions. Perform the five daily prayers for Muslims is an obligation. When the prisoners were allowed to implement Zohar prayer, Asr and Maghrib, it should likewise with Isha and Fajr prayers.

"Especially now in Ramadan, the special month for Muslims to increase his worship to get closer to Allah," he said.

Previously, it’s  informed that there were complaints on the attitude of the guards on Pomdam Jaya Guntur that restrict the prisoners in performing worship. Related to that, the former Religious Affairs Minister, SDA made a complaint letter "defamation of religion" to the leadership of parliament.

The letter was signed by 10 Muslim prisoners of KPK. In addition to SDA, also participated on signature were Didik Purnomo, Heru Sulaksono, Moh. Tafsir Nurchamid, Romi Herton, Rizal Abdullah, Waryono Karyo, Adriansyah, Abdul Rouf, and M Bihar Sakti Wibowo.

Besides, five other prisoners were non-Muslims also signed, namely: Raja Bonaran Situmeang, A. Bambang Djatmiko, Jannes Jhon Karababa, Willy Sebastian Liem, and Sherman Rana Krishna.

"Anyone, even a suspect that in fact is not necessarily wrong in the face of the law also has the right to worship according to the protected by Constitution 1945. Something ironic, blocking people worship and this occurs at a respectable institution in law enforcement, namely KPK," wrote SDA in his letter, on Friday, June 19.

Minister Lukman expressed deeply distressed by the attitude of prison officers of KPK. Lukman hoped KPK could immediately resolve the complaint.
