REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BRUSSEL -- Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, General Knud Bartels, Thursday said that "the global security situation is becoming increasingly unpredictable, unstable and interconnected."
Speaking at a press conference after a two-day meeting of the committee this afternoon, he said recent events in the Ukraine, Syria and the Sahel region "have reinforced the need for NATO to be ready for a wide range of potential threats both near and far abroad.
"We are facing a new security architecture which we need to address. The challenges are global and multifaceted, non-traditional, and we must address them as such," Bartels stated.
He said military chiefs agree that NATO and its member nations need to address capability shortfalls, training and readiness through investment, activity and cooperation.
"Certainly, investments cost money but, the price for insecurity is much more expensive and we all agree to that," he added.
The meeting discussed a wide range of security issues and provided military advice to NATO Ministers and Heads of State and Government on the key themes for the NATO summit to be held in Wales in September.
