REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALEMBANG -- Indonesian academician from UNESCO IHE, Institute for Water Education, Delft, Netherlands, FX Suharyadi, PhD, said Palembang city administration cannot directly follow flood control technique of the Netherlands, as the two countries have different rainfall conditions.
"The Dutch flood control measure could be used as a reference, but it cannot be directly adopted concerning the different geographical and rainfall conditions in Indonesia, especially Palembang, and the Netherlands," he said here on Friday.
He explained that drainage is the key factor to control flooding, so it must be properly maintained.
The Netherlands has canals that are being looked after very well.
The high awareness of the Dutch people in maintaining the drainages and the environment is also a key to the success of the country in controlling floods, Suharyadi pointed out.
The other determining factor was rainfall, which in the Netherlands tends to be low at only 60 millimeters per day.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the rainfall reaches to 200 millimeters per day. Therefore, flood control systems that apply to the Netherlands must be optimally analyzed before implementing it in Indonesia, he added.
Suharyadi explained that the analysis for the control system has implication on infrastructure provision to anticipate puddles in Palembang, which is a swampy lowland.
For instance, water pump installation and use must be in accordance with the rainfall in Indonesia, he added.
