Jakarta records 182 fires in initial three months of 2015

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- A total of 182 fires have occurred in the capital city of Jakarta in the first three months of 2015, revealed the city's fire mitigation and evacuation service.

"From January to March 11, 2015, a total of 182 fires were reported across Jakarta's five mayoralties," Subedjo, head of the service, remarked here on Wednesday (11/3).

He noted that during the period, West Jakarta recorded the maximum number of fires totaling 43, followed by South Jakarta at 42, East Jakarta at 34, Central Jakarta at 33, and North Jakarta at 30.

"We have deployed 6,354 personnel and 1,373 fire engines to overcome all the fires in the period," he stated.

He reported that three people had died due to the fires while 13 others were wounded.

"Seven fire fighters meanwhile have also been injured while extinguishing the fires," he remarked.

He noted that 919 families had lost their homes as a result of the fires.

"A total of 3,191 dwellers lost their homes to the fires, while material losses worth Rp55647.15 million were reported," he revealed.

The 16th floor of Wisma Kosgoro located on MH Thamrin main road, Central Jakarta, caught fire on Monday afternoon.

"Fire broke out at 6:47 p.m. local time," a fire fighter Sapari said, adding that at least 31 fire engines were deployed to extinguish the fire.

No casualties were reported in the fire incident, but four floors were gutted by the fire.

Previously, on Thursday evening, (March 5), a fire ravaged hundreds of homes in a densely populated area in Central Jakarta, causing injuries to at least seven people, including two fire fighters.

According to Niko, the spokesman for the disaster mitigation team of the Indonesian Red Cross of the Central Jakarta chapter, the fire broke out at around 4 p.m. local time.

The fire fighters sustained injuries after falling down.

"They have been taken to a hospital. I do not know which hospital," he added.

At least 25 fire engines were deployed to extinguish the fire.
