Joint team found 16 bodies of victims in Nduga attacks

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The joint team of National Police and Indonesian Military (TNI) has found 16 bodied of shooting victims at Kabo peak in Nduga, Papua on Thursday (Dec 6) morning. Eight victims have been evacuated so far.

“The number of bodies that we found so far is 16, now we are in evacuation process from the scene to Mbua,” said 172/PVY Military Command commander Col. Inf. Binsar P. Sianipar on Thursday (Dec 6).

Earlier, eight survivors of a terror attack committed by armed criminal group members in Nduga District, Papua, have arrived in Timika, Mimika District, Papua Province, on Thursday. The survivors comprise seven men and one child. One of the men was rushed to Mimika regional public hospital for treatment of his injuries.

An Army helicopter evacuated the survivors from Nduga to Timika. The helicopter landed at Mozes Kilangin airport in Timika on Thursday at 10:50 a.m. local time.

Commander of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto and Deputy Chief of the Indonesian Police (Polri) Commissioner General Ari Doni Sukmanto personally greeted the survivors upon their arrival at the airport.

Previously, head of the Papua regional police headquarters, Senior Commissioner A.M. Kamal, informed that 31 people had been killed and one was allegedly killed by armed criminal group (KKB) in the rivers of Kali Yigi and Kali Aurak, Yigi sub-District in Nduga District, Papua. He suspected that as many as 24 people were killed on the first day.

Out of eight people who tried to escape into the home of a local legislative member, seven were killed by the KKB, while one person has not yet been found. Sr.Com. Kamal added that the victims were workers at the Istaka Karya project, who were building bridges in Kali Yigi and Kali Aurak.

However, based on latest information from National Police Deputy Chief Commissioner General Ari Dono Sukmanto, there were 22 people had been killed in an attack by KKB in Nduga, Papua. He said 21 of the victims were civilians who were workers of Kali Yigi bridge construction from PT Istaka, while another one was a military member, Second Sergeant Handoko.
