REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) expressed disapproval to the discourse of reducing working hours for women and relocating their workplaces in proximity to their homes.
According to a press statement from the NGO received here on Wednesday (10/12), Komnas Perempuan pointed out that instead of changing the working hours of women so that they get more family time, the government could have issued a policy in sectors such as education and could have provide a more child-friendly city infrastructure.
"The improvement in the educational sector, existence of child-friendly city infrastructure, and centers of knowledge in the city will help to increase the quality of our young people," noted the statement.
Komnas Perempuan stated that quality time for Indonesian families can be substantially increased if the government improves the transportation system and provides safe childcare centers for the workers.
The NGO also suggested to the government to grant additional paid leaves to pregnant and new mothers and paid paternity leaves for fathers to take care of their children.
The discourse to reduce the working hours of women was first highlighted by Vice President Jusuf Kalla. Head of National Population and Family Planning Agency Fasli Jalal supported the idea, emphasizing that the policy will enable mothers to have more time to interact with their children at home.
