REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said, in cooperation with the International Energy Agency (IEA), launched a book titled, "The 2015 In-Depth Review of Indonesia's Energy Policies."
"The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has enjoyed good relations with the IEA since 2006, and the ministry has participated in various training programs organized by the IEA, including workshops, publications, and a high-level meeting," Sudirman noted here on Tuesday.
In a review of the book, this year, the IEA found that the energy subsidy in Indonesia has become a major challenge to develop the energy sector.
"The government's effort to eliminate fossil fuel subsidies is a significant progress," stated Executive Director of IEA Maria van Hoeven.
According to Maria, the government's efforts could serve as a benchmark in order to decrease the consumption of fossil fuels and other fuels.
"This is in line with Indonesia's energy policy. The ministry has set a target that renewable energy should account for at least 23 percent of the total energy consumption by 2025," he said.
The IEA is an intergovernmental organization established by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in 1974 following the oil crisis in 1973-1974.
The main objective of the agency is to achieve stable energy supply with special emphasis on the oil market and to sustain durable economic growth.
With a membership of 29 countries, the IEA has 42 Implementing Agreements, which become the framework of cooperation with countries outside the IEA.
