REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Judges of Central Jakarta District Court sentences Xenia reckless driver Afriyani Susanti to serve 15 years in prison for causing the death of nine pedestrians. Drunk and exhausted, Afriyani (29 years) on January 22 drove her car fast and veered at Tugu Tani. She hit and killed nine pedestrians and injured the other three.
The prosecutor on July 1 charged her with Article 338 of the Criminal Code and Article 311:4 Laws No. 22/2009 on causing accident that leads to death with 20 years of prison. Presiding judge Antonius Widyanto said the defendant was not proven guilty of conducting the premeditated murder as cited on Article 338.
Families of the victims were raged and dismayed at the judge’s decision. "At least 20 years in prison or life sentence," a relative of a victim, Mulyadi, shouted in the court room.
While Afriyani's lawyer, Bernard Jungjungan Pasaribu, said he respected judges' verdict. "We will not intervene even her family is disappointed," he said.
